About CEARCH

The Centre for Exploratory Altruism Research (CEARCH) is a research and grantmaking organization – we try to find and fund highly cost-effective philanthropic ideas. Hence, we conduct:

  • Research to identify high-impact causes
  • Grantmaking and donor advisory work to move money to such promising causes.

Team

Joel Tan
Founder & Managing Director

Joel is a long-time EA, and a Giving What We Can pledger since 2014. At CEARCH, he is responsible for high-level strategy, as well as for research and grantmaking in the areas of global health & development (link) and EA meta (link).

Previously a policy officer in the Singapore government, he subsequently worked as a management consultant specializing in policy development and government relations, before joining the Charity Entrepreneurship incubation programme and founding CEARCH in 2022. Stan Pinsent
Research Fellow

Stan is an Applied Researcher at Founders Pledge, where he contributes to high-impact research on climate change mitigation. Stan was previously Director of Research at CEARCH, and remains with us as a Research Fellow, to spearhead our research and grantmaking in the areas of global catastrophic risks (link) and mental health (link).

Prior to his research career, he was an educator. Stan read Mathematics at Oxford.

Advisory Board

Joey Savoie
Co-Founder & CEO, Ambitious Impact

Joey is responsible for overall strategy and direction at Ambitious Impact (AIM), which runs multiple programs meant to fill crucial gaps in the philanthropic ecosystem. Notably, AIM’s flagship Charity Entrepreneurship program identifies exceptional people and provides them with the ideas, training, and funding that allow them to start high-impact charities which save and improve lives at scale. AIM’s other programs cover grantmaking, research, and for-profit entrepreneurship.

Prior to AIM, Joey co-founded Charity Science, which fundraised for high-impact charities; and Charity Science Health, which increased vaccination rates in India using mobile phones and behavioural nudges.

Peter Wildeford
Co-Founder, Rethink Priorities

Peter co-founded Rethink Priorities, which pursues research on high-impact opportunities across different cause areas, including animal welfare, global health & development, and global catastrophic risks.

Currently, Peter serves as Chief Advisory Executive at the RP-sponsored think tank, the Institute for AI Policy and Strategy (IAPS).

Dr. Norman Campbell
Professor Emeritus of Medicine, University of Calgary

Dr. Campbell is a leading expert on cardiovascular disease, hypertension, and salt, and previously served as President of the World Hypertension League.

He was instrumental in establishing national clinical guidelines in Canada for the detection, treatment and management of high blood pressure, and was awarded the Order of Canada in 2014 in recognition of his contributions in the fields of research and public health.

Myron Krueger
Open Philanthropy

Myron is an experienced operations and human resources expert, with a proven track record of building out these functions at early-stage startups such as Alvea and Omnipresent.

Presently, Myron works for Open Philanthropy in grant operations.
